A New Christian Movement?

I have been sitting on this one for a few days, for a few reasons. First, I was in shock. I couldn’t understand why someone would choose to kill Charlie Kirk of all people. Yes, he is a MAGA conservative, but there are a lot of them in the media. The different thing about Charlie Kirk that you didn’t get with the others was his focus on young people and his willingness to have a civil conversation. He could give a smirk of satisfaction when someone was being hateful and arrogant with their questions and he came back strong with scripture and verse, or quoting the constitution to put them in their place. I always liked Charlie Kirk. I would see him often on Fox News or on YouTube videos. I was always amazed at how someone that young could know so much about the Bible and government. Over this last week I have learned so much, about Charlie Kirk, the man, about hatred, and about Christians.

I expected the assassination of Charlie Kirk would be big news for a few days and something would knock it off the news cycle. Never would I have expected to see what happened. I was surprised to hear the media referring to the event as an assassination. That, I thought, was a word reserved for prominent people. Charlie wasn’t a prominent person, I thought. The day after the assassination, I was in Jonesboro for some doctor visits, and my mom went for company. We were sitting in Dairy Queen for lunch, and several people were talking about it between tables, out loud and not caring about who heard them. The next day I went to work and almost everyone I saw wanted to talk about it. I had no idea that the man was so popular. Maybe it was just the horrific nature of the act that killed him and the fact that so many people saw the video. I refused to watch it.

One thing I noticed, which wasn’t a surprise was all the posts on social media that said something like, “There is never an excuse for violence no matter which side of the isle you are on, but…” When are people going to learn that when you make a statement and then say ‘but’ and make another statement, you cancel out any credibility of your first statement. I kept seeing posts that either said this, or the response was from someone pointing out all the horrible things that Charlie Kirk has said. Well, in researching for this post, (yes, I do research before I write most of these things) I found the actual quotes where Kirk said the things that have given him the reputation of a hateful, homophobic, racist. Let’s look at a few.

Once he was asked if he had a 10-year-old daughter who was raped and got pregnant, would he make her carry the child. His answer was, “Yes, the child would be born.”

I know too many if not most, this sounds like a horrible thing for a father to say. However, if you believe with all your heart that God is against abortion, this is the only choice for a Godly man to make. I do not believe for a moment that if this happened, that this decision would not absolutely tear his heart out as a father. I believe that he also had faith that God wouldn’t put him through more than he could take. That’s biblical.

1 Corinthians 10:13

13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (NIV)

Another controversial statement that gets people upset is this:

“We must also be real. We must be honest with the population. Having an armed citizenry comes with a price, and that is part of liberty... We need to be very clear that you’re not going to get gun deaths to zero. It will not happen. But I think it’s worth it. I think it’s worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year, so that we can have the Second Amendment.”

Since the beginning of this nation, many have sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom. This is a truth we hold sacred. Freedom isn’t free, never has been and never will be. Charlie was just telling the truth. There will be collateral damage in keeping our freedom. His death was a sacrifice that brings to light the importance of freedom of speech. Is it worth it for a few people to die for the freedom of the nation as a whole? I personally think it is worth it. There are those who think people shouldn’t have the right to own firearms. Just remember that disarming the citizens was Hitler’s first step. An armed citizenry keeps the government in check. If you are an anti-2nd amendment person, there might just be a time in the future that you are very thankful your neighbor is armed.

Kirk once suggested that trans people are wearing the gender equivalent of ‘black face.’ He said, “A man who calls himself trans is wearing ‘woman face,’ no different than I would wear ‘black face’ trying to be a Black person. It’s assuming an identity that isn’t yours.”

I realize that the Bible doesn’t touch on trans people, because science had not come that far in biblical days. However, the Bible does say that God created man and from his rib He made woman. Society may accept trans people as the gender they have chosen, but their DNA is still the same, their chromosomes are still the same, either YY or XY, male or female. This is the point that he was making. It may not be a popular or politically correct point, but he was coming from a religious perspective, not a worldly one.

Critics of Kirk like to call him a racist and misquote him. The quote he is accused of saying is:

"Black women do not have brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person's slot."

I couldn’t believe he would say this, so I had to look it up. I listened to the video and sure enough, he was misquoted. He was talking about Joy Reid, Michelle Obama, Sheila Jackson Lee, and Ketanji Brown Jackson being “affirmative action picks” ... which is true. He then played a video of Sheila Jackson Lee on the House floor talking about being an affirmative action pick and had she not received a position from someone more deserving she wouldn’t be where she is. Then Kirk said, in response to Sheila Jackson Lee, “You do not have brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a white person's slot."

I admit, this wasn’t the best thing he could have said, but he did not say that black women do not have brain processing power to be taken seriously, he was referring only to Sheila Jackson Lee who just admitted that she wasn’t good enough to make it on her own.

The last one I will discuss is one I see the most, that really angers people, especially women. Kirk thinks women should be submissive to men. Well, yes, he did. At a Young Women’s Leadership Seminar, Kirk said, “Young ladies need to be able to submit to a godly man.”

This is another biblical statement. The following verses speak to this specifically.

Colossians 3:18 ESV

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Ephesians 5:33 ESV

However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:24 ESV

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Ephesians 5:22-33 ESV

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, ...

1 Corinthians 11:3 ESV

But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.

Kirk wasn’t telling young women to submit to just any man, he was saying they should be able to submit to a godly man. I think most Christian woman would be willing to submit to a godly man. I’m willing if I ever find the godly man to marry. I find that is the most difficult, finding the godly man to submit to.

I’m not here to try to change anyone’s mind on Charlie Kirk. I heard one talking head on the news say that Charlie Kirk was to the Christian what Martin Luther King was to the black community. At first, I rolled my eyes and thought what a stupid thing to say. Since last Wednesday, I have watched an awakening giant. This is no longer about Charlie Kirk the man, but Charlie Kirk the Christian. It was never about MAGA or conservatism, it was about Christianity. I take back my eye roll. This has become a movement, and Charlie Kirk has become a martyr. The assassin succeeded in one thing; he has brought a lot of Christians out of the dark and they are speaking out for the first time in a long time. Many times, I have prayed that something will bring this nation to the Christian nation it should be. I know many others do as well. Maybe Charlie was the sacrifice it will take to get Christians to rise up for the Lord. I hate that it took the horrific death of a young father and husband to get people talking. Charlie Kirk was far from perfect, but no one can say he didn’t try to live for God. Just recently he was asked what he would like to be remembered for. He said he would like to be remembered for his faith and courage.

Charlie, I think you succeeded. RIP
